Get ready to travel to East Asia with Thai Pavilion, Vivanta by Taj, Gurgaon. Thai Pavilion is hosting Dragon boat festival, where you will get to enjoy Bak Chang – traditional jasmine scented rice (not jasmine rice, but thai rice) wrapped in bamboo leaves and perfectly steamed. A new side of Thai cuisine which you might have not tasted before. And do not forget to try the classic pandan dessert.

Food Story

Dragon boat festival is one of the most iconic festival of china, but over the years it has spread its wings in East Asia too. Thailand also celebrates this festival in their own style.

We recently got to visit Thai Pavilion, one of the finest Thai restaurant in town. The Thai Pavilion in Mumbai is considered to be the best Thai restaurant in India and Chef Ananda Solomon is known for bringing Thai cuisine to India. The day I got invite, I read that Chef Ananda is retiring from Taj and indeed it isn’t a great news.

Thai cuisine is certainly one of the most popular international cuisine in India. I always love to visit Thai pavilion and been fan of this place.

Bak Chang

This time the festival was exciting and initially I was apprehensive of this place celebrating Chinese festival. However the food was outstanding and most of the dishes that I tasted, I had it for the first time

Apart from their traditional salad Som Tom Kood Sod( shrimp and young papaya salad ), Yam Som Ao( pomelo salad, spicy chilli coriander dressing ) the highlight of the menu was Bak Chang.

Bak Chang is also popular as rice dumplings stuffed with different kind of meats, fish and vegetables. It is made with Thai rice (not jasmine rice) stuffed and then wrapped in bamboo leaf and then steamed to cook perfectly. I tried bak chang filled with minced chicken and minced lamb. This dish was new dish to me. It is very sticky rice but has great flavour. The minced lamb too was absolutely delicious

Your meal is incomplete if you have not tried their dessert – classic pandan – flavoured coconut and rice pudding. This is made of fragrant pandan leaf and layered with rice pudding – Absolutely divine!
