Chi Ni opened year back at the most luxurious property in india, Dusit Devarana with a bang. Inspired by Kay Mayfair of London, Ankur Bhatia of Bird Group and Bernard Yeoh, Proprietor – Kai Mayfair have created a concept which is chef focused and here, it is under the guidance of dynamic chef Lauah Ban.
One of the most interesting aspect of the menu is the first page. You will find list of dessert created by the genius pastry Chef Anand Panwar. The food at Chi Ni is inspired Chinese that has taken its inspiration from Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand and London (Chef Ban took his training from London)
When Chi Ni opened last year, it was open for dinner alone on weekdays and lunch/dinner on weekends. Recently, they have introduced lunch, with a set menu which has mix of veg and non-veg. The kind of lifestyle we follow, our dinners are always elaborate compared to our lunches because of our busy schedule. This set lunch is ideal for corporates, and also for regular diners to enjoy the scrumptious food of Chi Ni. A four course meal with soup – appetizer – main course – dessert – makes a perfect lunch!
Ash gourd soup with sea food and the hot and sour soup sets the tone for rest of the day. Ash gourd is almost a forgotten vegetable and has been used with sea food in a very light broth that makes it absolutely delightful. The use of rice vinegar in hot and sour soup makes it tangy and delicious. The strong flavor of vinegar gives the soup a real kick that I love! You can choose any 1 soup from the available 3 options that includes Ash gourd soup with sea food, Hot &Sour soup (veg/chicken), Sweet corn soup
Appetizers came pre-plated – blanched spinach – steals the show, every time that I have. Perfectly blanched baby spinach, topped with sauce made of sesame paste, soya sauce. Honey cuts the iron flavor of the spinach and give it little sweet taste. Wasabi prawns has a very light flavored wasabi sauce (from hunan region) that just hits you with the last bite. Lettuce wrap chicken and crispy spicy mushrooms were also good. For the vegetarians, we have vegetarian prawns too. The vegetarian prawns/chicken is made of soya.
Then comes the star dish. Szechuan steamed sea bass -The flakes of the fish falling perfectly and is served in a very light soya broth. The main course can be enjoyed with Hong Kong noodles or Ginger fried rice. The wok friend chicken for the main course too was delicious. You have 1 option to choose from the available 4 options that includes sea bass, wok chicken, bean curd with three kinds of mushroom and vegetarian chicken with three chilies
Chi Ni’s meal is incomplete without the dessert. You can either choose Senses of Chocolate or Splendid Yogurt. Pastry Chef Anand Panwar is a rock star and his desserts are absolutely divine. He mentioned that every dessert he makes has at least one Indian ingredient. Senses of Chocolate – Valrhona Chocolate parfait, Chocolate soup, Microwave cake, Chocolate candy & Chocolate pearls – this dessert felt incredibly light and deeply chocolaty – a perfect dessert after a perfect lunch! Splendid Yogurt – Baked yoghurt, Red berry coulis, Candid ginger & mango sorbet – The fruity flavor and ruby red sorbet on top of the baked yoghurt was delightful! The orange zest which gives a tangy flavor well complimented the sourness of baked yogurt.
Like I said, the dessert and the food – the ambience and the mesmerizing view – A perfect meal that truly defines what Chi Ni stands for – “Chinese cooking from the heart”
